H.E.R.O. for Children improves the quality of life for children living with and affected by HIV/AIDS through enriching programs, unforgettable experiences, and connections with the community. The organization is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit registered with the Georgia Secretary of State, and it identifies itself as the only organization in Georgia solely focused on quality-of-life care for children with HIV/AIDS. Its headquarters are in Roswell, Georgia. The organization’s work is structured around programs that address social, emotional, educational, and developmental needs for children and teens. Super HEROs Mentoring is a one-on-one mentoring program for children ages 6 to 16 that supports cognitive skills, self-esteem, academic performance, social and communication abilities, and goal-setting through guidance from positive role models. Camp High Five is a week-long residential summer camp for children ages 6 to 16 who are living with or affected by HIV/AIDS, combining recreational, educational, and psychosocial support services. H.E.R.O. for Children also operates Transition To Adulthood, which prepares high school-aged participants for college or trade school enrollment, internships or part-time employment, and stronger independence and life-management skills. Its annual Holiday of HEROs program extends the organization’s reach across Georgia by partnering with AIDS organizations and clinics to provide children with at least one needed item and one wanted gift during the holiday season. Additional initiatives listed by the organization include the Bright HEROs Scholarship, Prom Project, Back-to-School Bash, UGA HEROs Spring Event, GT HEROs Spring Event, UGA HEROs Olympics, and DAIR to be a HERO. Together, these programs position H.E.R.O. for Children as a specialized Georgia nonprofit focused on sustained quality-of-life support for children and adolescents affected by HIV/AIDS.
