Stonewall Community Foundation invests in education as a pathway for LGBTQ+ people to overcome complex social and economic barriers. The foundation has partnered with donors for more than 20 years to create scholarship opportunities that expand access to higher education in New York City and across the United States. Its scholarship program uses a universal application, allowing eligible students to submit one application for consideration across multiple awards, with required materials including applicant information, short responses, and a letter of recommendation.
The foundation’s scholarship portfolio shows a focused commitment to distinct LGBTQ+ communities and educational pathways. Named awards include the Aritzia x Stonewall Scholarship, established in 2021 to support LGBTQ+ women studying or planning careers in business, fashion design, retail management, or social justice advocacy; the Fred Ohm Dream Builder Scholarship for LGBTQ+ immigrants and LGBTQ+ young adults transitioning out of foster care who are pursuing undergraduate study in New York State; and the Hawley Przybycien Lesbian Scholarship for lesbian students with leadership in LGBTQ+ or feminist organizations. Stonewall Community Foundation also supports Bronx-based students through Phil’s Fund Scholarship for LGBTQ+ students attending Bronx Community College, Hostos Community College, or Lehman College, and it continues lesbian higher-education support through the Traub-Dicker Rainbow Scholarship.
