Southwest Texas State University

Southwest Texas State University was the former name of Texas State University, a public university in San Marcos, Texas. The institution was founded in 1899 as Southwest Texas State Normal School and has evolved from a teacher-training school into a comprehensive doctoral-granting university serving students across Texas and beyond. Its main campus is in San Marcos, positioned in the Austin–San Antonio corridor, and the university also operates a Round Rock Campus that extends its academic presence in Central Texas.

The university’s work spans undergraduate, graduate, and professional education. Texas State organizes its academics through multiple colleges and schools and offers a broad range of degree programs, including nationally recognized strengths in fields such as education, business, health professions, public administration, and the sciences. The institution is designated a Hispanic-Serving Institution, reflecting a student population that includes a large share of Hispanic and Latino students, and it reports enrollment of more than 40,000 students, making it one of the larger universities in Texas.
