American Association of Blacks in Energy-Washington DC Metropolitan Area Chapter operates within the American Association of Blacks in Energy network and is tied to an organization headquartered at 1625 K St. NW, Ste. 1200, Washington, DC 20006. Its work sits in a broader association structure that combines membership, public policy, student opportunities, leadership development, and career support. The national organization maintains programs and resources that include the Energy Policy Symposium, webinars, an LPD Institute, a Career Center, chapter-based engagement, and a scholarship program focused on preparing students for education and careers in the energy industry.
A central part of that work is support for high school seniors pursuing postsecondary study. Across local chapter, regional, and national levels, AABE awards more than $350,000 in scholarships annually. The scholarship program targets students with a minimum unweighted GPA of 3.0 who plan to major in approved fields such as science, technology, engineering, mathematics, and business, intend to enroll in an accredited college, university, technical school, or trade school in the fall semester, and demonstrate leadership in their communities. For the Washington, DC Metropolitan Area Chapter, the chapter scholarship serves students in the Washington metropolitan region, including residents of the District of Columbia, Maryland, and Virginia, with emphasis on graduating high school seniors from historically underserved populations who are pursuing STEM-related fields or technical STEM programs.
