- This program is open to high school seniors, students with GED diplomas, undergraduates at 2- and 4-year colleges and universities, and vocational/trade school students. Applicants must have "a compelling desire to pursue higher education," in spite of personal, socio-economic setbacks, such as teen pregnancy, former incarceration, interrupted schooling, poverty, or homelessness. They must be U.S. citizens or permanent residents, younger than 25 years of age, and have a GPA of 2.0 or higher. Recipients are expected to "give back" by conducting community service and by serving as mentors to younger, aspiring Shawn Scholars.
