- This program is open to residents of southern California who have demonstrated or expressed a genuine interest in a career in aviation, aerospace, or aeronautics, as through membership in aviation Explorer Scouts, membership in an aviation or aerospace club, attendance at an aviation or space camp, extracurricular aviation or engineering activities, or student membership in professional engineering society. Applicants must be enrolled or planning to enroll for full-time study at an accredited school (e.g., community college, 4-year college, university, technical school) in a program leading to a certificate or degree in aviation, aerospace, or aeronautics. Eligible fields of study include aircraft architecture; aeronautical, aerospace, civil, electrical, electronic, or mechanical engineering; airport management; physical sciences; avionics; airframe and/or power-plant (A&P) certificate; and air traffic control certificate. Selection is based on a 250-word essay on their interest in aviation, aerospace, aeronautics, robotics, or science; academic record; interest in the field of aviation, aerospace, aeronautics, or robotics and/or science as related to aviation; extracurricular activities; recommendations; and financial need. The top 5 applicants may be invited to an interview. U.S. citizenship or permanent resident status is required.
