Understanding the Prompt
Before you begin writing, take time to fully understand the scholarship prompt. The Math, Science, and Engineering Divisional Scholarship aims to support students pursuing education in these fields. Reflect on how your experiences align with this goal and what unique perspective you bring to the table.
Brainstorming Across the Four Buckets
Your essay should encompass four key areas: background, achievements, gap, and personality.
- Background: Consider what experiences have shaped your interest in math, science, or engineering. Think about specific moments or influences that guided your educational path.
- Achievements: Highlight your accomplishments in relevant areas. Use metrics or specific examples, such as projects completed, leadership roles held, or competitions entered, to illustrate your contributions.
- The Gap: Identify what you currently lack in your education or experience that this scholarship will help you address. Explain how receiving this scholarship will facilitate your growth in the field.
- Personality: Infuse your essay with personal anecdotes that reveal your values and character. This will help the committee connect with you on a human level.
Creating an Outline
Organize your thoughts into a coherent structure. A suggested outline might include:
Match workspace
Find scholarships that fit your profile
- Introduction: Start with a vivid scene or moment that captures your journey in math, science, or engineering.
- Body Paragraphs: Dedicate each paragraph to one of the four buckets, ensuring each section flows logically into the next.
- Conclusion: Reflect on what you have learned and how the scholarship will impact your future. End with a forward-looking statement that connects your past experiences to your future aspirations.
Drafting Voice and Style
As you draft your essay, maintain an active voice and focus on clarity. Avoid clichés and ensure each sentence adds value to your narrative. Show, don’t just tell; use specific examples to illustrate your points. Reflect on your growth and insights, answering the “So what?” question throughout your essay.
Revision and the “So What?” Factor
Once you have a draft, take time to revise. Look for areas where you can enhance clarity and specificity. Consider whether your essay effectively communicates your journey and aspirations. Ensure that each paragraph serves a purpose and contributes to your overall message.
Common Pitfalls to Avoid
Be mindful of the following common mistakes:
- Using Clichés: Avoid overused phrases and generic statements. Be original in your expression.
- Vagueness: Steer clear of vague assertions about your passion. Support your claims with concrete examples.
- Passive Voice: Use active voice to convey your actions and contributions directly.
- Inventing Facts: Stick to the truth about your experiences and achievements. Authenticity is crucial.
